Dozens suffer injury, 2 dead after icy crash in Baltimore

Dozens of cars and a big rig were involved in a massive Interstate 95 accident in South Baltimore last Saturday. According to Emergency Management, it was the worst car accident to happen in recent history in the city. A total of 67 cars and a tanker truck were involved.

The icy accident happened close to the Washington Boulevard exit of I-95 a little before 5 a.m. Police say a tanker lost control, fell off an overpass and landed on the street below. The crash resulted in two deaths and a dozen injuries. At least seven people had serious injuries in the crash. The collision caused roadway closures and took a very long time for authorities to clean up.

One of the most difficult parts of the accident involved the tanker truck’s cargo, which included fuel that emergency crews believed was gasoline. Some of the fuel got into a nearby waterway, went downstream and caused some fires.

The director for the Baltimore City Office of Emergency Management said that it was a miracle that more people didn’t suffer injury. As of last reports, however, the University of Maryland Medical Center was caring for 23 patients who were hurt in the collision. Sixteen patients reportedly had minor injuries like cuts, broken bones, lacerations and bruises. Another seven patients were reportedly in critical condition, two were in serious condition and one was in fair condition.

There are so many factors that could be at issue after an icy car accident. Such potential factors include but are not limited to the way a city maintained the roadway. If it can be shown that a city was responsible for failing to keep a roadway reasonably clean from ice, then plaintiffs in an icy car crash may be able to hold the city liable for their injuries.
