A U.S. Marine from Peoria Heights died in Gambrills, Maryland, motorcycle accident last Friday. According to police in Anne Arundel County, the 21-year-old was riding his motorcycle when another vehicle struck him. He was 30 minutes outside of Baltimore at the time.
The incident happened at approximately 3:30 p.m. A BMW sedan was driving southbound when it lost control and drove across the double-yellow line into oncoming traffic. The BMW driver hit the motorcyclist head-on.
The force of the crash caused the Fort Meade Marine to be thrown from his motorcycle. The man was wearing a motorcycle helmet that complied with state law, but he suffered fatal injuries in the crash. Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the crash site.
The 28-year-old driver of the BMW fled the scene of the collision. However, authorities soon tracked him down to a quarry about a quarter mile away and arrested him. As of last reports, investigators were still trying to piece together what happened in the crash and prosecutors had yet to file charges against the BMW driver.
The tragic loss of the U.S. Marine in this case will no doubt be felt by his family members, fellow Marine corps members, community members and friends. His loss will take years for close family members to come to emotional terms with. One way that family members of fatal accident victims can try to seek closure is through the pursuit of a wrongful death action. When a Maryland resident dies in an accident due to the fault and/or negligence of another party, surviving family members might be able to pursue financial compensation in court for the loss of their loved one.
