Why does an empty nest lead to divorce?

Life really changes for parents when they become empty nesters. They go back to living on their own, and their children move off to attend college, start careers, get married and much more.

In some cases, this leads to a divorce. The couple may have been married for decades, so family members and friends are often surprised to hear that their marriage is now ending. They assumed it was very stable. But why could being empty-nesters actually trigger the divorce?

Some couples have known for a long time

In some cases, couples were already aware that they wanted to get divorced. They may have known that there were problems with their marriage, but they agreed to stay together and work to raise the children jointly. In some situations, parents are simply nervous about getting divorced while their children are still young, so they intentionally put it off. When they become empty nesters, they both know that it is time to take that next step and dissolve their marriage.

Other couples are unaware of their own issues

But in other cases, couples do not realize beforehand that there are so many issues with their marriage. Maybe they no longer have much of a connection or spend any time together. The problem is that being parents took a lot of work and distracted them from these issues in their own marriage. But once the children move out, they reassess what makes them happy and what they really want in life, leading to the divorce.

If you and your spouse are getting divorced, it is crucial that you understand exactly what legal steps to take when dividing marital property and much else.
